Two local veterans organisations are coming together to challenge businesses around the UK who have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant. The Sandbag Times/SBT Radio and Veterans Radio Net are laying down the challenge to those who signed the covenant to find out what it really means to them.
The Challenge/Study comes in the wake of an incident where a homeless veteran, living in a tent was issued a bidding place on the local council list. The veteran, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was expected to remain in his tent until he got a chance to bid on a property. The local council was challenged with the covenant and, despite them signing the covenant, they had no idea of what the council asks and even in some cases, demands by law to those who have signed it.
After a local veterans charity intervened, the veteran was moved to a B&B. the local charity was also instrumental in finding him a job.
The Armed Forces Covenant Challenge will be asking questions related around (1) why the company signed up to the covenant, (2) their understanding of the covenent and finally (3) how they involve themselves in supporting the covenant and veterans in their community.
The Sandbag Times and Veterans Radio Net will also be asking other veterans organisations to join the challenge.
