Labour have attacked the Tory led defence cuts saying the Conservatives’ “broken promises” on the military are a security risk to Britain.
A Labour spokesman went on to say that after severe Conservative cuts to the military, the party’s criticism of Labour’s defence policies has been branded hypocritical. Labour MP and former Army Major, Dan Jarvis has highlighted that the British Forces are now ‘Overstretched and underfunded’. He also went on to state “Britain’s defences under Tory leadership are almost unrecognisable compared to how they were left by the last Labour government. Our Army has been seriously reduced, undermining our ability to react to a changing threat from state enemies and international terrorism. Thousands of highly experienced war veterans who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan are leaving the forces. Many are leaving earlier than they would have done because they see no future under the Tory Party.” However, labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has also been critisised for his opposition to the Trident programme.
In the current ploitical climate questions are being asked of Britain’s vulnerability should another major conflict arise.
