RAF pilots have been drafted in to drop emergency supplies by helicopter to snow bound Cumbria after the Beast from the East and Storm Emma wreaked their havoc leaving areas completly cut off for a week. Communities in Fellside, South Stainmore and Alston have been left isolated by the icy blast for the past five days. Council chiefs warn they will remain cut off for another 48 hours because of the heavy snowfall and slow progress in clearing roads.
A Chinook helicopter has been brought in to drop supplies, including food, coal and logs for heating and electrical heating appliances in an operation that begins today. Stewart Young, leader of Cumbria County Council, said: ‘We have some communities who have now been stranded for five days and we have to do all we can to ensure that they are safe and well.’
