A very crazy thought came into my mind last night. Please bear with me as I paint you a picture.
This scenario is set post Brexit where supplies are in low quantity. Due to public unrest, the Government requires the British Army to carry out a patrol from their base to a particular store to ensure its security and to report back any issues.
The local army unit whose responsibility this store lies under replies to the government.
“Dear Sir or Madam,
Thank you for your interest in using our Regiment to carry out the aforementioned patrol. Before we can proceed further, please fill out the Army Patrol Application on attachment and return it to us by email. We will then send it to the correct department for action.
So the government fills out the initial application and returns to it to the unit. The unit replies;
Dear sir or madam,
Thank you for your application. Unfortunately, on this occasion we are unable to proceed as the following was not in place at the time of application.
- A detailed risk assessment: This is to ensure there will be no danger to our staff during the patrol. This may include, loose paving stones, burnt out cars, unruly mobs etc.
- Due to lack of availability, the dates you specified are not suitable for the unit due to other commitments and costings. Please resubmit with alternative dates.
If you have any further enquiries, please contact our customer services automated helpline and choose the option you require on the number provided.
Alternatively, you may consider carrying out the patrol yourselves. Attached is a guide which may help in training your staff. There are also some useful contact numbers for further information.
The Government put the required risk assessment in place and chooses an alternative date and resubmits the application. The unit answers.
Dear sir or Madam,
We are pleased to tell you, your application for a patrol has been approved. However, before we can proceed, please read the attached document to ensure all provisions are catered for, for the patrol carrying out your task.
We will now forward your patrol on to the planning department who will contact you with further arrangements.
Thank you for your patience
Two weeks pass and the planning department contacts the government.
Dear Sir or Madam,
Thank you for your application which is currently being reviewed. Unfortunately, due to staffing cuts, we are unable to patrol on the required date. We can however, offer a shorter patrol with an alternative unit who will be happy to discuss different patrol locations.
We end the scenario unfinished here….
This is a very unreal scenario which goes beyond the realms of belief. The Government would never stand for it. Yet they expect our veterans to go through much the same today. This is the frustration veterans face with mental health, benefits, housing etc… Our armed forces never put stumbling blocks in the way, wrapped our commanders or government in red tape, always delivered when asked and we’re prepared to sacrifice everything without question. Why should it be different vice versa?
